Motorway Madness at Stonehenge
The Proposed double barreled
303 tunnel will close every week (alternative tunnels to close
fortnightly) for routine maintenance. Traffic will be diverted through
local villages, mostly on Sundays. Plus it will be closed for
breakdowns/accidents & demonstrations. Not good for local villages.
The tunnel will have big vents for fumes, spaced out along its length
with supposedly camouflaged chimneys. It will destroy ancient
earthworks, some of which they say will be rebuilt nearby, by the
contractors. Who knows the vibrations from the tunnel may damage the
stones.
Meanwhile enter Cornel
Parker with his southern alternative route £70 Million Pounds
Cheaper. Other problems are if a disaster should occur such as the Alps
Tunnel recently, were many lives were lost. Stonehenge would then be
associated with tragedy. The contractors assure us all the latest
safety features will be used.
BUT WE'VE HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE!
If Stonehenge is damaged by
the motorway how will we repair it. what happens in the future If/When
other forms of transport are invented and roads become obsolete in 50
years time. As the Bristol London channel. The motorway through the
world heritage site at the Egyptian Pyramids got stopped recently,
because of international outrage.
An alternative to roads
might be sky lifts, that go a bit like a cross between ski lifts &
electric pylons, but with capsules like on the London Eye. A network of
these running around the towns and villages of Wiltshire would relieve
the pressure for the Motorway at Stonehenge and still help people get
their shopping. Additional benefits could be less damage to the
environment, continued use of farmland, less suburban disruption. It
could go over back yards instead of going through them, development of
new technology and big savers on land purchase, as well as bringing the
community together through public transport.
Just a thought. Willy X ...
